About Us

Colin M Smith is a family business which has been serving the people of Angus and the surrounding areas for over 50 years.

From humble beginnings, Colin was working with a local electrical retailer in Forfar in the 1960's when he was given the opportunity to take over the struggling Kirriemuir branch. After turning round the store's fortunes, he purchased it in 1970, so beginning the Colin M Smith brand.

The above picture was taken in the early seventies, second from the left Dave Craik retired in 2014 with 49 years service, third from the left Ivor Franchi retired in 2006 after 49 years service, two employee's who had served the company and the local community for almost 50 years an outstanding achievement for both.

In 1973, Colin's son Munro joined the business, and the following year they opened a new shop on East High Street in Forfar. Selling mainly radios, hi-fi and the emerging colour television from major brands of the time, such as Murphy and Ferguson. A loyal customer base was being built through quality products and excellent customer service with a personal touch. By the mid 80's, domestic appliances became part of the vast array of products on offer from Colin M Smith, along with brands such as Panasonic and Sony. In 1988, having outgrown the East High Street shop, the business moved to larger premises round the corner, on Castle Street. It was during this time that Colin M Smith became a member of Euronics, the largest buying group in Europe, giving an even better selection of home electricals to the people of Angus.

In 1997, the Forfar branch of the business was on the move again, this time to the bottom end of Castle Street, to a former car sales showroom, where the business remains today. Customer parking, good warehouse space, and a large showroom giving the customer a wider selection of products, make an even better shopping experience.

In 2007, Colin M Smith was opened in the Abbeygate Shopping Centre in Arbroath and have now moved to larger premises on the High Street. The third generation of Smiths are now partnering the business, keeping it a family concern, retaining the same values that have been the solid base upon which it has been built - quality products with excellent, efficient and friendly service.

Colin M Smith was recognised at the Innovative Electrical Retailing Awards, held at the St John Hotel, Solihull. The awards recognise the dedication to and achievements of the retail industry through the service offered by the independent retailers.
